Travelling to French Polynesia in July is to experience something extraordinary: Heiva i Tahiti, the most iconic cultural festival of the South Pacific. This ancestral celebration is the living expression of ma’ohi identity, where dance, music, art, and traditional sports come alive with elegance and spiritual power. More than a performance, the Heiva is a celebration of mana, the sacred energy that flows through Tahiti, Moorea, Bora Bora, and the most remote Polynesian archipelagos.

Origins and history: resistance and cultural rebirth

Born in 1881 under the name Tiurai, the festival emerged as a response to European missionaries’ attempts to suppress Polynesian traditions. In an act of resistance and pride, Polynesian culture not only survived but flourished stronger than ever.

Today, Heiva i Tahiti is the most important cultural event in French Polynesia, bringing together artists, dancers, athletes, and artisans from across the islands, from the Tuamotu to the Marquesas and the Australs.

Traditional ceremonies: the sacred Umu Ti

The festival opens with a mystical ritual: the Umu Ti, or firewalking. Guided by a traditional priest (tahua), participants walk barefoot across glowing volcanic stones after an intense spiritual rite. This sacred act marks the beginning of a month filled with ancestral energy, community spirit, and celebration.

‘Ori Tahiti: the sublime art of dance

On the stage of To’ata Theater, dance troupes compete in the legendary ‘Ori Tahiti contest, one of the festival’s highlights. Each choreography tells a story inspired by Polynesian myths and legends, expressed through elegant movements and costumes crafted from natural fibers, flowers, feathers, and shells.

Experiencing ‘Ori Tahiti live is more than art, it is an aesthetic, emotional, and spiritual journey into the Polynesian soul.

Himene: the islands’ sonic poetry

Equally captivating are the himene competitions, traditional polyphonic chants accompanied by pahu (sacred drums). These songs narrate legendary battles, mythical romances, and prayers to the gods, carrying the listener into the oral history of Polynesia.

It is a soundscape of emotion, spirituality, and identity.

Traditional sports: strength, mastery, and living heritage

Heiva also celebrates Polynesian sports, showcasing skill, endurance, and ancestral heritage:

  • Fruit carrier races (800–1500m, carrying bananas and coconuts).

  • Traditional javelin throwing.

  • Lifting volcanic stones weighing up to 150 kg.

  • Coconut tree climbing and husking.

  • Va’a races (traditional canoe) across open sea, up to 24 km.

  • The colorful Pareu horse race, with riders in sarongs and floral crowns.

  • Polynesian wrestling, a traditional martial art.

Each competition embodies the warrior spirit and festive energy of the ma’ohi people.

Polynesian craftsmanship: natural luxury at its finest

Throughout the month, Papeete hosts a crafts village where artisans from all archipelagos present their savoir-faire:

  • Exquisite wood carvings from the Marquesas.

  • Elegant pandanus weaving from the Australs.

  • Lustrous black pearl jewelry from the Tuamotu.

  • Traditional tatau (tattoo), a sacred symbol of lineage and identity.

Visitors can explore workshops, demonstrations, and competitions, discovering the authentic luxury of Polynesian artistry.
